Say Goodbye To PIN Codes: Welcome DIGIPIN

In this article, I am going to talk about DIGIPIN an open-source nationwide geocoded addressing system developed by the Department of Posts.

DIGIPIN is an open-source nationwide geocoded addressing system developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. It divides India into approximately 4m x 4m grids (homes, offices, organisations, etc.) and assigns each grid a unique 10-character alphanumeric code based on latitude and longitude coordinates. Unlike traditional PIN codes that cover large areas, DigiPin offers a unique code that pinpoints the exact location of a property. The DIGIPIN system is expected to benefit online shoppers, logistics providers, and emergency responders by reducing errors and increasing efficiency. Users can share their DIGIPIN with online e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon to ensure accurate and speedy deliveries. DIGIPIN simplifies address management by providing precise location-based identification, especially in areas with unstructured or changing addresses. It also helps in areas where no clear address exists, such as rural regions, forests, and oceans.
The Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, launched two transformative digital platforms: ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’ on 27th May 2025 in alignment with the National Geospatial Policy 2022, which envisions the development of an advanced geospatial infrastructure to support digital governance and public service delivery. DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is an open-source, interoperable, geo-coded, grid-based digital address system developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. It is a cornerstone of the Department of Posts’ vision to offer Address-as-a-Service (AaaS) — an array of services associated with address data management to support secure and efficient interactions between users, government entities, and private sector organisations.

Know Your PIN Code Web Application :-

  • The six-digit PIN Code system, introduced in 1972, has served as the backbone of India’s postal delivery. However, recognising the need to modernise and refine its geographic accuracy, the Department undertook a national geofencing exercise across all postal jurisdictions to geo-reference all the pin code boundaries of the country.
  • ‘Know Your PIN Code’ web application which uses GNSS location features to allow users to:
  • Identify the correct PIN Code based on the location.
  • Submit feedback on PIN Code accuracy for continuous refinement of pin code dataset.
  • To access Know Your PIN Code Web Application, type https://www.indiapost.gov.in/VAS/Pages/findpincode.aspx in your web browser. A new web page opens, in that you can know your PIN code by selecting the State/Union territory and City/District or by entering the Post office name resulting in a list of all pin codes under that criteria.
  • This page also allows you to download All India PIN code directory and few other facilities like Tracking a consignment or complaint, locating a Post office, and Calculate Postage.
